While there, he was a math and science classroom teacher at the middle school level, was a high school math resource teacher for special needs students, taught Algebra I and Consumer Math in a high school summer school program, a K-12 District Curriculum Coordinator for Math and Science, and was an adjunct faculty in a teacher education program for a private university. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree (1972) and Masters of Education Degree (1978) at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. His Doctor of Education Degree was earned at Brigham Young University (1985). He came to BYUH in 1987 and served as Chair of the Elementary Education program for 8 years, prior to be appointed as Dean of the School of Education, where he served for 9 years. He continues to serve in the School of Education as a Professor of Education.

Roy and his wife, Patrice, are both adult converts to the Church. Although they did not know each other until after their conversion, they joined the Church in the same year, 1972, and in the same Branch in Greenville, North Carolina. On their third date, he proposed to Patrice in the fall of 1972. They were married the following summer (1973) in the Salt Lake Temple. (The Washington, D.C. Temple was under construction, but not yet opened.) They are the proud parents of four children, three sons and one daughter. They have been blessed as grandparents to have two handsome grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter.
